We try to have as many varied breakfasts as possible at home. This to avoid breakfast apathy, which my kids – Arthur in particular – suffer from. If it were up to me, we’d have porridge topped with fruit most weekdays then pancakes or eggs of some description at weekends. I’d be fine with that! But if we have porridge too often, then he gets very grumpy about it!
To appease him I make toast or crumpets sometimes, or a bowl of as-low-sugar-as-I-can-find breakfast cereal like Rice Krispies or Weetabix (even these are packed with hidden sugars). When I serve up something that I feel isn’t that nutritious at breakfast time, it’s nice to slip in some fruit along with it. Then I feel like they’ve ticked off one or two of their five a day before even leaving for school.
Smoothies are obviously a great way to get your little monsters to eat fruit – especially if, like mine, they won’t eat certain fruits in their whole state. Like Arthur – he ‘hates’ banana. And Bea – she ‘hates’ kiwi. So a smoothie like this that mainly tastes of strawberries (which, let’s face it ALL children seem to love) is perfect.
I made mine with almond milk for an extra protein hit, but you could use normal milk – or even half milk and half Greek yoghurt for an extra thick ‘shake.

Large handful of strawberries
Large glassful of almond milk
- Simply whizz up the fruit and the milk, and serve with sliced strawberries on top.
